Smooth Sailing: Top tips for getting your boat summer ready.

Summer is just around the corner and we’re all looking forward to more time out on the water. If your boat has been sitting still all Winter we recommend giving it a good check over before you hit the water. Here are our tips to get your boat shipshape and ready for action.

  1. Check your batteries. The colder months and age can affect the battery and whilst it may have enough grunt to start initially, it might not have enough capacity to start the motor or run emergency equipment later on. The last thing you want is to be caught out in the water with a battery that has given up. Also look for any signs of corrosion. We can do a load test or check fluid levels for you.

  2. Check and change the oil. Just like a car, your boats engine needs proper care. Start by checking the oil levels and if needed, change the oil. Fresh oil and clean filters ensures your engine runs smoothly and efficiently. You can purchase your oil and filters through us.

  3. Inspect the hull. Have a good look at the hull to check for damage. The things to look for are stress cracks, blisters or minor flaws – which have the potential to be a hassle later. While you’re at it, check the propellers for signs of damage. If anything looks like it needs a repair or you’re unsure about, book a time for us to check it out.

  4. Check your electronics, lights and navigation systems. Test them to make sure everything is in working order, including your steering system and water pump.

  5. Check under the boat to make sure it is clean and not harbouring anything nasty. If your boat needs antifouling or if there is something you want an expert opinion on, give us a call.

  6. Give your interior a good clean. Even if your boat has been sitting undercover, you should still give everything a good wash and dry, and air out storage compartments. This will uncover any mould that needs to be dealt with and get rid of musty smells. If the interior looks like it needs a deeper clean or your upholstery needs replacing or mending, talk to us and we’ll recommend the right person for the job.

  7. Check your safety equipment. Make sure that items such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, flares and first aid kit are all in good condition. Replace anything that is expired or damaged. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

  8. Inspect the trailer. Check the tires, brakes and lights to make sure everything is working correctly and ready to roll. You don’t want to have your day fishing ruined by a faulty trailer.

Or….you can book your boat for a maintenance service with us. We can do all the checks for you and repair or replace anything that is faulty. It also gives you peace of mind that your boat is in good seaworthy condition.
